Spot welding for the perfect weld in sheet metal

At Machinefabriek Boessenkool you can go for many different machining activities. From small to large workpieces and projects. At Machinefabriek Boessenkool in Almelo we have an extensive machine park. Our machines are of the best quality, so that our professionals can get to work for you without any problems. We can perform various welding operations for you. Think of MIG welding, TIG welding, orbital welding, but also spot welding. With spot welding you opt for a high-quality weld for your sheet metal.

What is spot welding?

Spot welding is a welding process that is mainly used for connecting thin sheet metal, usually between 0.5 and 3 mm. The thickness of the material does not have to be the same. No material needs to be added for welding. The most common materials for spot welding are stainless steel, steel, aluminium and galvanised metal.

Spot welding belongs to the main group of electric resistance welding. In resistance welding, the two pieces to be connected are pressed against each other and a spot-shaped weld is made by passing an electric current through a small surface of the workpiece, so that the metal melts.

How does spot welding work?

The layers of sheet metal that are to be welded are clamped between two electrodes with force. A large electric current is sent through the workpiece via these two electrodes for a short period of time. This current causes the greatest heat development at the point where the electrical resistance is greatest, the contact surface. The metal melts there due to the large temperature increase. No shielding gas is required for spot welding, since there is almost no space between the components to be welded and therefore no oxygen or other substances that are detrimental to the weld can be present.

Roll seam welding

Roll seam welding is a variation on spot welding. In this welding process, the point-shaped electrodes are replaced by copper rollers. These copper rollers are driven at a speed that can be set precisely. This allows welding to be done by sending a pulsating current through the rollers that press the workpiece firmly. By accurately setting the rotational speed of the rollers in combination with the number of welding pulses per unit of time, many welding shapes can be set. This makes it possible to perform spot welding with a regular distance, such as a dotted line.

Roll seam welding is also mainly used for sheet metal.

CERTIFICATIONS AND STAMPING AUTHORIZATION

Certificates and inspections always guarantee the best quality of every operation by Machinefabriek Boessenkool. Machinefabriek Boessenkool is authorized for overstamping / stamping for various inspection bodies, including RINA, Lloyds, ABS, DNV, and others.

Advantages and disadvantages of spot welding

The process of spot welding has several advantages, but also several disadvantages compared to other welding processes.

Advantages of spot welding

  • Spot welding can be easily achieved with a welding robot. In addition to automation, spot welding is also suitable for manual welding
  • Spot welding allows for a high processing speed
  • Spot welding is easy to learn due to its simple operation

Disadvantages of spot welding

  • Spot welding can only be applied to thin sheet material of approx. 0.5-3 mm thickness
  • It is not possible to place a spot weld at every location, since both sides of the material must be accessible to the welding electrodes
  • For spot welding, the plates to be welded must be approximately the same thickness
  • With spot welding, there is a chance of inclusions if the surface of the parts to be welded is not properly clean
  • The welds are point-shaped with spot welding and as a result the welded connection is less strong than with a weld over the entire length of the seam. Dirt and moisture can also accumulate between the sheet metal parts around the weld.

Spot welding at Machinefabriek Boessenkool

For spot welding, Machinefabriek Boessenkool is the right place for you. By welding, materials are connected to each other and continuity is created between the parts, because both the material of the workpiece and the material that is added are melted. Our skilled welders have the experience, the necessary knowledge and the necessary certificates to spot weld your workpieces for you.
