What is orbital welding?

Orbital welding is a welding process in which welding is fully automated. The name of this welding process comes from the machine that is used for this. The word ‘orbital’ is derived from the Latin ‘orbita’ and means orbit or path. Orbital welding refers to the path that the mechanized welding torch takes around a tube in order to create welds very accurately and yet quickly. The orbital welding process is mechanized and this means that a machine makes the weld, whereby only the orbital system has to be set by an employee. Orbital welding is often used on round tubes, pipes, tubes and other round objects. Orbital welding is also very clean and accurate, which makes this welding process very suitable for welding objects in the food industry or pharmaceuticals, for example. With orbital welding, the welding head rotates in a fixed path 360 degrees around the workpiece to be welded, which makes the penetration perfect and ensures a smooth internal weld seam.

Types of orbital welding

In orbital welding, we distinguish between two different forms:

  • Orbital welding with closed head
  • Orbital welding with open head

An orbital welding machine can be equipped with a closed head. This is also called a type with a cassette clamp. In this case, only tubes that are straight around the weld joint can be welded together. An advantage of the closed head is that an inert environment can be created by using a shielding gas.

An orbital welder can also have an open head. In this case, one part of the tubes that are to be welded together must be straight. The other part can have a different shape, for example a flange or a bend. The flange or bend is then clamped to the straight tube. Then the welding machine is turned on and the two parts are connected together by means of a weld.
