e-Horse: machine for ‘grooming work’

It was one of the eye-catchers during Future Farming & Food Experience: the e-Horse. The e-Horse has four-wheel steering, is fully electric and lightweight. Typically intended for care work.

Arable farmer and plant grower Bastian van der Veen was interested in a vehicle to care for his crops. He came up with the machine, machine factory Boessenkool made it. Minimal weight and fully electric and therefore in principle emission-free work were the spearheads for the design. Last year, the e-Horse was used for the first time for hoeing on a reasonable scale. In combination with the solar panels, the vehicle appeared to have enough energy on board for six to eight hours of work. An attempt was made to design the vehicle in such a way that the energy requirement is minimal.

Each wheel is equipped with a 48 Volt wheel motor. The ‘roof’ consists of solar panels. The outer panels can be folded down for transport or storage.

All electric
Everything works electrically. The drive is infinitely variable and is operated with a small joystick. The lifting gear and the steering are operated electrically. The only oil in the vehicle is the oil in the reduction gear of the wheel motors. All four wheels are permanently driven. Up to a few degrees of steering angle, only the front wheels are steered. So while hoeing, the vehicle drives like a conventional tractor. With a larger steering angle, the four-wheel steering automatically switches on to make a short turn on the headland. Steering can be fully automatic on GPS. The vehicle weighs 1,880 kg without implements.

The e-Horse has performed well and will be followed up based on the experiences. This will be a vehicle that will not be equipped with one, but with three lifting devices. This will be a version that is powered by a fuel cell. The frame will be narrower, so that the successor can also work with six-meter-wide implements. This is not possible with the current frame because it does not have the space to fold up an implement for transport.

e-Horse technical

  • Drive: permanent four-wheel drive and four-wheel steering. 48 Volt wheel motors.
